Olive Oil and Type 2 Diabetes


People with type 2 Diabetes are usually over 40 and may find olive oil helpful in a couple of ways.Type two diabetes is a very serious disease that can lead to issues with your eyes, heart, kidneys among other things. Type 1 diabetes occurs in children.

This chronic disease occurs when the pancreas does not make enough insulin to meet your body’s needs. Insulin is a hormone whose main function is to transform the sugars contained in the food into energy. When this does not happen, the result is an excessive increase in blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia).

Some studies are saying that some folks with diabetes who consume a diet high in monounsaturated fat have the same control over blood sugar levels as those who eat low fat diabetic diets.There are also studies out there suggesting that a diet high in monounsaturated fat may be better than a low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet.

Spanish researchers report that calorie controlled diabetic diets high in monounsaturated fat do not cause the participants to gain weight, and is a more satisfying way to eat than so called infomercial low fat diets. Also, a German study said that increasing monounsaturated fat intake lowered LDL cholesterol levels in some of the participants.

The Mediterranean diet can lower the risk of diabetes. Researchers in Spain used questionnaires to track the eating habits of more than 13,000 university graduates for several years. They found that those who closely followed a Mediterranean diet which utilizes olive oil reduced there risk of developing diabetes by 83 percent.
